POLICY WIRE — Brussels, Belgium — The European Union has levied a fine of €550 million ($630 million) on online retailer AliExpress for permitting the sale of illegal products. These items include unsafe toys — and cosmetics that don’t meet the EU’s stringent environmental and safety standards.
The EU stated that AliExpress failed to adequately prevent the sale of counterfeit products. even when the platform identified illegal goods, many remained available for purchase online for several weeks.
