POLICY WIRE — Norway’s star striker Erling Braut Haaland is experiencing a significant surge in global popularity during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, captivating fans beyond traditional soccer audiences. The 25-year-old’s performance and persona have led to what’s being termed Haaland mania, according to the original report.
Haaland’s influence is evident in online metrics. Google Trends data indicated a 900 percent increase in worldwide searches for his name compared to the same period last year. This figure escalated to over 5,000 percent when considering searches originating solely in Canada, the report stated. Social media engagement also reflects this trend, with more than 1.4 million posts on TikTok featuring the hashtag Haaland. Since the start of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, he has gained upwards of 12 million new followers on Instagram alone.
The Manchester City player, who has already secured nine major trophies with his club, including the Champions League, is leveraging the World Cup platform to reach a broader audience. Laura Duch, 25, a new follower, told CBC News that she typically doesn’t watch soccer outside of the World Cup but has joined the Haaland craze. Duch described him as “a very likeable, charismatic and talented guy. He seems very fun and down-to-earth,” adding that he has become a topic of conversation among her friends, family, and even strangers. She further stated, “I think he’s smitten a lot of people, including me.”
Haaland’s appeal is partly attributed to his dry — and goofy humor, frequently displayed on social media. Examples cited in the report include an Instagram post from Texas where he wore a cowboy hat and a shirt reading, “Y’all Can Kiss My Dallas.” On Snapchat, where he’s reportedly most active, he has shared witty selfies, such as one with a Shrek-themed filter captioned selfie with my twin, another simply showing him drinking milk, and a third where he used a filter to appear bald, writing, Might go bald. Duch highlighted a picture of Haaland looking directly into the camera with the caption “well well well” as her favorite, noting, It’s so random. I love it.
Zoë Glatt, a digital ethnographer based at the London School of Economics, identified several traits contributing to Haaland’s appeal to new audiences. Glatt noted his “Undeniable talent on the pitch combined with an endearing goofiness, unusual physicality and a refreshing lack of toxic masculinity.” Glatt also observed that Haaland’s relationship with English footballer Jude Bellingham has gained viral traction, with “commenters gleefully referencing Heated Rivalry.” Glatt commented, To me, this is a great example of the joys that can occur on social media platforms, when one fandom intersects with another in a way that is full of humour, levity and playfulness.
Beyond his online persona, Haaland remains a formidable presence on the field. He is currently one goal behind Lionel Messi of Argentina and Kylian Mbappé of France in the competition for the Golden Boot, an award for the tournament’s top scorer. Messi — and Mbappé each have eight goals, while Haaland has seven. Despite his rising superstar status, Haaland has maintained a humble demeanor. He previously told reporters, “I didn’t expect this at all. To be in the quarter-finals with Norway in the World Cup is quite surprising, even for me.” He described playing in the tournament as a “huge honour” and “really special.”
