Erdogan Urges Russia and Ukraine to Cease Black Sea Ship Attacks, Pushes for Grain Corridor
Erdogan calls on Russia and Ukraine to stop targeting Black Sea vessels, while pushing a new grain corridor to revive exports and protect shipping lanes.
POLICY WIRE — Istanbul, Turkey — Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Saturday demanded that Russia and Ukraine immediately halt attacks on civilian vessels in the Black Sea, arguing the assaults pose an unacceptable threat to commercial traffic. He told Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy that the incidents were inexplicable and called for responsible actions to safeguard shipping lanes.
Erdogan and Zelenskyy also agreed to collaborate on a new grain corridor through the Black Sea, aimed at restoring grain exports from the region and reducing the war’s impact on global supply chains.
The president’s appeal comes amid growing concerns from NATO Black Sea allies about spillover effects on commercial shipping, as Turkey seeks to reestablish safe maritime trade routes.
