Electronic Arts Shuts Down Legendary Game Studio BioWare and Cancels Next Mass Effect
Electronic Arts closes iconic developer BioWare after over thirty years, canceling the next Mass Effect amid a wider wave of studio layoffs.
POLICY WIRE — Redwood Shores, United States — Video game publisher Electronic Arts is shutting down the popular and influential game development studio BioWare after more than three decades in operation. The upcoming Mass Effect game, which would have been the fifth installment since 2007, has officially been canceled.
BioWare confirmed the closure via social media on Wednesday following a report by Bloomberg detailing broader cutbacks. The company is laying off 400 people , with approximately 50 of those job cuts occurring at BioWare.
The closure follows Electronic Arts closing a massive $55 billion sale of its business to a consortium including Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund PIF, investment firm Silver Lake Partners, and Affinity Partners, a firm led by President Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner.
Representatives for Electronic Arts did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding the widespread workforce reductions. Reflecting on the studio’s legacy, BioWare acknowledged its history through social media by thanking players for making their virtual worlds unforgettable.
Founded in Canada in 1995 and acquired by Electronic Arts in 2007, BioWare established its formidable reputation through immersive role-playing adventures. Their catalog includes celebrated fantasy titles like Baldur’s Gate and Dragon Age alongside acclaimed science fiction epics such as Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and Mass Effect.
However, the studio struggled when it attempted to venture into multiplayer shooters with 2019’s Anthem, shifting away from its core strength of crafting compelling single-player narratives. That title failed to capture the kind of dedicated long-term audience that sustains modern online hits like Fortnite and Overwatch.
Furthermore, recent entries in the developer’s two flagship franchises—namely 2017’s Mass Effect: Andromeda and 2024’s Dragon Age: The Veilguard—received mixed reviews and alienated segments of their core fan base. Development on a fresh chapter of the Mass Effect franchise was actively underway before the sudden announcement of the studio’s closure.
