POLICY WIRE — Edmonton, Canada — Organizers of the Edmonton Marathon have acknowledged a significant error in the measurement of the 2026 marathon route. The course was found to be 674 meters longer than the standard marathon distance of 42.195 kilometers.
The admission came after an official re-measurement revealed the discrepancy. Organizers have issued an apology to participants and spectators, assuring that steps will be taken to prevent similar errors in future events.
“We deeply regret this mistake and are committed to ensuring accuracy in all our future events,” said a spokesperson for the Edmonton Marathon. “We are reviewing our measurement processes and will implement stricter checks to avoid any such issues.”
The error has sparked discussions within the marathon community about the importance of precise course measurements and the potential impact on participants’ performance and records. Athletes who completed the marathon will have their times adjusted to reflect the actual distance run.
