Eclipse Eye Damage: Key Symptoms and Urgent Warnings Issued

POLICY WIRE — London, UK — Health authorities have issued a critical warning about the dangers of viewing solar eclipses without adequate eye protection. Exposure to the sun during an eclipse can result in severe eye damage, including blurred vision and potential long-term harm.

The Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) emphasized the importance of using certified eclipse glasses or handheld solar viewers. “Looking directly at the sun, even during an eclipse, can cause solar retinopathy, a form of eye damage that can lead to permanent vision loss,” said a spokesperson for the RNIB.

Symptoms of solar retinopathy may not appear immediately. Individuals may experience blurred vision, blind spots, or distorted vision hours or even days after exposure. If any of these symptoms occur, immediate medical attention is advised.

Dr. John Smith, an ophthalmologist at Moorfields Eye Hospital, highlighted the risks. “The sun’s rays can burn the retina, the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye. This can cause significant and sometimes irreversible damage,” he noted.

The public is urged to avoid using regular sunglasses, homemade filters, or uncertified eclipse glasses, as these do not provide sufficient protection. Only ISO 12312-2 international eclipse glasses should be used.

In addition to wearing proper eclipse glasses, experts recommend indirect viewing methods such as pinhole projectors to observe the eclipse safely. These methods allow individuals to view the eclipse without looking directly at the sun.

The next solar eclipse visible from the UK is expected in 2025. Health officials are preparing educational campaigns to ensure the public is aware of the risks and necessary precautions.
