POLICY WIRE — Kinshasa, DR Congo — Confirmed cases in the ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo have reached 3,262, according to an overnight update from the country’s health ministry. This number is nearly on par with the 2018-2020 outbreak, which remains the largest ever recorded in the nation.

The data from the Congolese health ministry indicates that 1,437 patients have died out of the 3,262 confirmed cases. Officials have described this as the fastest Ebola outbreak on record, primarily concentrated in the eastern Ituri province.

The 2018-2020 outbreak in Congo was marked by significant challenges, including armed conflict in the region, which hampered response efforts. The current outbreak has similarly faced obstacles, including community resistance — and logistical difficulties.
