Driver Killed in Bedford Train Crash Accelerated Past Red Signal, Investigation Reveals
Train driver Shaun Burton died after speeding through a red signal in Bedford crash. Survivors demand safety upgrades.
POLICY WIRE — Bedfordshire, United Kingdom — A train driver who was killed in a fatal collision near Bedford admitted to seeing a red signal but continued to increase speed before the crash, according to investigators.
The incident occurred when the East Midlands Railway (EMR) train driven by Shaun Burton, 60, collided with a stationary train at Elstow on June 19. The crash caused more than 160 injuries and led to calls from survivors for improved safety measures to prevent future disasters.
Investigators revealed that the train had accelerated after the driver received a warning that he had passed a red light. Despite acknowledging the signal, Burton continued to speed up before applying emergency brakes just seconds before impact. The train involved in the crash had passed a rarely used red signal, raising questions about the system’s reliability.
