POLICY WIRE — City, Country — Dollar Tree has inaugurated 75 new stores over a three-month span, reflecting a surge in sales for discount retailers as American consumers face heightened financial pressures.
The company did not disclose the locations of these new stores in its recent April-June earnings report. These additions represent less than 1 percent of Dollar Tree’s total 9,436 stores across the U.S. and Canada.
Dollar Tree, known for its $1.25 price point on most items, has experienced a 7 percent increase in sales over the past year. CEO Mike Creedon outlined a strategic plan to enhance product offerings and competitiveness by 2025.
Creedon stated, We are broadening our assortment to appeal to a wider range of income levels. This strategy positions Dollar Tree favorably against competitors like Dollar General, which opened 125 stores from April to June.
Retail consultants at Retail Strategies note that the compact size of discount stores, typically between 8,000 and 25,000 square feet, allows them to easily occupy existing buildings, unlike larger retailers like Walmart.
The appeal of Dollar Tree extends across all income brackets, particularly benefiting from the current inflationary environment where gas prices have soared past $4 due to geopolitical tensions.

Creedon observed, As customers seek to maximize their spending, they are increasingly choosing Dollar Tree. The retailer has also focused on store renovations to create a cleaner, brighter, and more shopper-friendly environment.
The trend towards discount shopping is evident as consumers from various income levels, including those earning over $100,000, are opting for budget-friendly options. Dollar General CEO Todd Vasos noted a similar shift during a recent earnings call.
Dollar General reported a 5.2 percent sales increase in the second quarter of 2026, significantly higher than the previous year’s growth. The company’s expansion and sales performance underscore the growing consumer preference for value-oriented shopping.
