D4vd Switches to Public Defender in High-Profile Murder Trial

POLICY WIRE — Los Angeles, USA — In a surprising turn of events, singer D4vd, also known as David Burke, has decided to part ways with his original legal team and will now be represented by public defenders in his high-profile murder trial. This announcement was made in a Los Angeles courtroom on Monday, leaving many stunned.

Following a meeting with L.A. County Superior Court Judge Charlaine Olmedo in chambers, defense attorney Blair Berk informed the court of D4vd’s decision to switch to public defenders. Judge Olmedo confirmed the singer’s choice by asking, Is that your wish, Mr. Burke?

This unexpected change occurred during a routine pre-trial hearing. D4vd is accused of killing 14-year-old Celeste Rivas Hernandez, whose remains were discovered in the trunk of his abandoned car.

D4vd’s new attorney, Walid Fouad Kandeel, who was previously seated in the gallery, was asked by Judge Olmedo to step forward and introduce himself to the court after the change in legal representation was disclosed.

Kandeel requested that the arraignment be postponed to allow more time to review the case. However, Judge Olmedo denied the request and entered not guilty pleas on behalf of the defendant, assuring Kandeel that he would be given additional time if needed.

The court proceedings will resume on October 19. D4vd, who was shackled and wearing an orange jail jumpsuit, smiled and shook hands with his former attorneys, Berk and Regina Peter, as the court adjourned. He will continue to be held in custody without bail.

In a statement, Berk confirmed the withdrawal of her team as counsel and the appointment of the Los Angeles County Public Defender’s Office. She expressed continued support for D4vd and confidence in the new legal team.

The Los Angeles County Public Defender’s Office offered condolences to the victim’s family and affirmed their commitment to providing D4vd with a thorough and serious defense.

The reason behind the separation of D4vd and his original legal team remains unclear. Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman expressed confidence in the public defender’s ability to provide a zealous representation.

Judge Olmedo previously ordered D4vd to stand trial on July 27 after reviewing evidence presented by prosecutors related to the slaying of Celeste Rivas Hernandez.

D4vd was arrested on April 16 at a house in the Hollywood Hills. The remains of Celeste Rivas Hernandez were found in a Tesla impounded at Hollywood Tow on September 8 of the previous year, following reports of a foul odor emanating from the vehicle.

Text messages between Hernandez and D4vd revealed that she had become pregnant at age 13 and had an abortion. In a message from early January 2024, D4vd apologized to Hernandez for “putting her through this.”
