Colombia Armed Groups Recruit Children for Drone Warfare, Report Reveals

POLICY WIRE — Bogotá, Colombia — A recent report by Human Rights Watch (HRW) has revealed that drug cartels and rebel factions in Colombia are increasingly enlisting children to perform hazardous tasks, including operating drones equipped with explosives.

The report, which draws on field research and interviews with affected communities, highlights the perilous nature of these assignments. Children, some as young as 12 years old, are being trained to pilot drones that carry explosive payloads, posing severe risks to their safety and well-being.

HRW documented multiple instances where these child-operated drones were used in attacks against both military targets and civilian populations. The use of children in such dangerous operations underscores the escalating brutality of Colombia’s ongoing conflict.

“The recruitment and use of children in armed conflict is a grave violation of international law,” said HRW’s Americas Director, Jose Miguel Vivanco. “These groups are not only endangering the lives of these children but also perpetuating a cycle of violence that impacts entire communities.”

The report calls on the Colombian government and international community to take immediate action to address this issue. HRW recommends increased monitoring and reporting of child recruitment, as well as enhanced protection measures for at-risk children in conflict-affected areas.

Efforts to combat child recruitment in Colombia have been complicated by the country’s longstanding conflict, which has seen various armed groups vie for control over lucrative drug trafficking routes.
