POLICY WIRE — Beijing, China — A China-led international team has identified the highest-energy light particle ever recorded, demonstrating that the universe can accelerate matter to energies 30 times greater than previously predicted.
The particle originated from a violent binary system known as Cygnus X-3, located in the constellation Cygnus. This system involves a dead star, or neutron star, stripping material from a massive companion star and ejecting powerful jets into space.
After traveling for nearly 30,000 years, the particle reached Earth in March 2024, where it was detected and recorded by the Chinese observatory.
The detection underscores the extreme environments and processes occurring in the universe, challenging current models of cosmic particle acceleration.
