Brooklyn Man Faces Arson Charges After Self-Ignition in NYC Google Building

POLICY WIRE — New York City, USA — A 63-year-old man from Brooklyn has been apprehended and charged with arson following an alarming incident where he set himself on fire within the lobby of a Lower Manhattan building that houses Google offices.

Identified as John Butch, the suspect reportedly utilized a lighter and an accelerant to ignite himself around 3 p.m. on Friday at 315 Hudson St., as per the New York Police Department. Emergency calls flooded in, leading to Butch’s swift transportation to Weill Cornell Medical Center, where he was treated for burns and stabilized.

Butch now confronts charges of arson, criminal mischief, and reckless endangerment. Authorities have clarified that he is not affiliated with the NYPD, despite the building also accommodating the department’s Internal Affairs Bureau.

Google, the predominant tenant in the 10-story, 500,000-square-foot edifice, occupies approximately 410,556 square feet, as part of its expansive Hudson Square campus, a its over $1 billion investment in New York operations.

The individual seemed intent on gaining entry to another tenant’s area, yet we are maintaining close communication with local law enforcement. In addition to Google, the building is home to NYPD offices, the New York Society for the Deaf, and other commercial entities. Street-level tenants include Sweetgreen and Joe & the Juice, alongside furniture company From the Source/FTS Studio.
