Brandon Figueroa Stripped of WBA Featherweight Title After Missing Weight in Las Vegas
Brandon Figueroa loses his WBA featherweight title after missing weight ahead of Saturday's Las Vegas bout against Tomoki Kameda. Read the full update.
POLICY WIRE — Las Vegas, United States — American boxer Brandon Figueroa has been stripped of his World Boxing Association featherweight championship after failing to make weight ahead of his scheduled bout in Las Vegas.
Organisers confirmed on Friday that the 29-year-old fighter tipped the scales at 1.4 pounds over the 126-pound division limit, registering 127.4 pounds for his upcoming matchup against Japanese challenger Tomoki Kameda.
Despite losing the championship belt on the scale, the Saturday contest will proceed as planned. However, only the 35-year-old Kameda will be eligible to claim the vacant world title if he emerges victorious.
Speaking through a translator, Kameda expressed clear frustration regarding the weight miss while affirming his readiness for the championship opportunity. Honestly, it is disrespectful, because I’m here, I suffered too. I did my thing. I’m ready for tomorrow, Kameda stated.
The challenger added that his extensive layoff would not hinder his performance inside the ring. It has been 18 months since I fought, but look at me, look how shredded I am. You know I’m ready. Everything remains the same, I’m going for the title tomorrow, Kameda said.
Figueroa originally captured the featherweight title in February following a victory over Britain’s Nick Ball in Liverpool. He is a two-weight world champion, having previously held the WBC featherweight title from 2024 to 2025 and the WBC super bantamweight belt in 2021.
