POLICY WIRE — Sacramento, CA — California’s Division of Occupational Safety and Health (Cal/OSHA) has levied fines totaling $150,000 against Blackbird Mountain Guides following a catastrophic avalanche in February that resulted in the deaths of three guides and six skiers.
The incident, California’s deadliest modern avalanche, occurred in the Sierra Nevada mountains. Cal/OSHA cited multiple workplace safety violations, including failure to provide adequate avalanche training and insufficient risk assessment procedures.
“The gravity of this tragedy underscores the necessity for stringent safety protocols in high-risk environments,” stated a Cal/OSHA spokesperson. “Our investigation revealed significant lapses that contributed to this devastating event.”
Blackbird Mountain Guides has 15 working days to contest the fines. The company has not issued a public statement regarding the citations.
This incident follows a series of high-profile safety and regulatory actions across various sectors. Notably, the Supreme Court recently allowed the continuation of construction on Trump’s White House ballroom, despite objections. In another incident, a record-breaking 1,260-pound blue marlin was caught off the Massachusetts coast, highlighting both human achievement and the unpredictability of nature.
As investigations and regulatory actions continue, the focus remains on ensuring safety and compliance in all high-risk activities.
