Australian MotoGP Finale at Phillip Island Abandoned Amid Torrential Rain
The final Australian Grand Prix at Phillip Island was cancelled Sunday due to severe weather. Officials cited safety concerns and medical helicopter access.
POLICY WIRE — Phillip Island, Australia — The final Australian MotoGP scheduled for the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit was officially abandoned on Sunday as relentless rainfall rendered the track unsafe for competition.
Organizers were forced to cancel the event despite a sell-out crowd, citing poor visibility and hazardous conditions. The decision also resulted in the cancellation of the preceding Moto3 and Moto2 races.
The cancellation prevented Marc Marquez from attempting to extend his world championship lead over Jorge Martin. The event was intended to serve as a historic farewell to the iconic circuit before the championship moves to Adelaide in 2027.
Officials confirmed the race was called off shortly after 3:30 p.m. local time. A statement from MotoGP noted that limited visibility was specifically affecting the operation of the medical helicopter at the Red Bull Grand Prix of Australia.
The track had already faced significant challenges throughout the weekend, with 25mm of rainfall recorded overnight and forecasts predicting an additional 35mm throughout Sunday. These conditions ultimately made it impossible to proceed with the final dance at the venue.
