POLICY WIRE — Quito, Ecuador — Ecuador’s ambition to clinch the South American U17 Championship ultimately fell short, yet prospective Arsenal talents, brothers Edwin and Holger Quintero, delivered standout performances throughout the tournament.
In late 2025, Arsenal officially confirmed their agreement to secure the highly-anticipated double signing of the twin siblings from Independiente del Valle. As both players are currently 16 years old, their formal integration into the Arsenal squad is slated for August 2027, upon reaching their eighteenth birthday.
During this interim period, the brothers are diligently pursuing their development in Ecuador, which included representing the Ecuador U17 national team at the recent South American U17 Championship. Holger Quintero earned four starts in the competition, while Edwin Quintero made two, with both consistently demonstrating their exceptional abilities.
Quintero Twins’ Tournament Highlights
The duo immediately made an impact in the opening match against Paraguay. In the 92nd minute, Holger netted a crucial late goal, converting a free-kick earned by his substitute brother, Edwin, directly under the defensive wall. Earlier in the game, Holger had also won the free-kick that led to Ecuador’s equalizer, which Edwin took.
Edwin’s arcing cross was headed back across the goal by Deinner Ordonez, setting up Mathews Soto for the finish. Their combined efforts proved pivotal in securing that initial victory. Following this, Edwin started the subsequent match against Colombia, with Holger entering for the final 19 minutes, though neither could break the deadlock in a frustrating goalless draw.
Holger once again proved instrumental in the third fixture against Uruguay. Operating from the left wing, he skillfully bypassed his marker before delivering a low cross to Steven Guerrero, who scored the 67th-minute winner in a 2-1 triumph. A minor setback for Holger came with his second yellow card of the tournament, resulting in a suspension for the final group stage game.
Fortunately, Edwin stepped up in his brother’s absence, curling an impressive effort from outside the penalty area as Ecuador defeated Chile 3-1. Although the same player later had a penalty saved in the second half, it did not deter Ecuador from securing all three points and topping their group, advancing to the knockout rounds.

Semi-Final Heartbreak and Future Prospects
Ecuador progressed to the semi-finals, where they faced a formidable Argentina side. Despite Argentina taking the lead, Holger responded by winning and converting a penalty to level the score at 1-1 in the 63rd minute. Regrettably, Argentina scored two late goals, eliminating Ecuador from the competition.
Both Quintero brothers featured for less than an hour in the subsequent 1-0 defeat to Brazil in the third-place play-off. Despite the disappointing conclusion to the championship for the team, the Quintero brothers can return to their home country and current club, Independiente del Valle, with considerable pride in their individual performances, having been central to much of their team’s success.
