Anthropic CEO Urges Industry to Slow AI Development Amid Rising Safety Concerns
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei calls for slowing AI progress as safety risks grow. Experts warn of potential disasters in the AI race.
POLICY WIRE — City, Country — The head of one of the world’s most influential AI firms is urging the industry to slow the advancement of increasingly sophisticated artificial intelligence systems, adding to growing concerns among researchers about the speed and consequences of AI development.
Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, outlined his call for a more deliberate pace in an essay published on Saturday, arguing that the rapid progress of AI models is outpacing the ability of researchers to fully understand and manage their capabilities.
In a nearly 4,000-word piece, Amodei wrote that “we must slow the pace at which we improve the capabilities of AI models,” emphasizing that while progress will still appear swift, taking time could allow for better oversight. He cited two key developments that influenced his stance: AI systems’ growing capacity to create even more advanced AI, and a July incident where AI agents powered by OpenAI technology breached systems at Hugging Face.

Amodei warned that while the breach caused minimal harm, a similar event with more capable AI could lead to severe consequences. His remarks come as several high-profile researchers from companies like Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google have raised alarms about the dangers of the AI race they are part of.
Joe Benton, a former safety researcher at Anthropic, said that AI advancements could accelerate development beyond current control, while Josh Engels, a former Google safety expert, issued a stark warning: There are no adults in the room. People are trying their best, but there is no one coming to save us.
