POLICY WIRE — City, Country — A 30-year-old American hiker has died after being struck by lightning while trekking on Mount Etna, one of the world’s most active volcanoes, local authorities confirmed.
The incident occurred as the hiker was navigating the volcanic terrain when a sudden thunderstorm developed. Emergency services responded promptly, but the hiker was pronounced dead upon arrival at the scene.
Mount Etna, located on the east coast of Sicily, is known for its unpredictable weather patterns and frequent volcanic activity. The region has seen several incidents of hikers encountering dangerous conditions, prompting local authorities to issue warnings about the risks associated with hiking during adverse weather.
