The new system, named Smart—short for Strategic Management of Airspace, Routes and Trajectories—is designed to analyze flight schedules, weather conditions, airport capacity, and operational constraints to forecast traffic patterns and identify potential congestion before it occurs.
Developed by Air Space Intelligence under an $875 million, 12-year government contract, the software is intended to become a central intelligence hub for the nation’s airspace once fully implemented. The program’s launch includes the establishment of a centralized office at the Department of Transportation’s headquarters. Despite its promise, the transition has raised concerns among industry stakeholders about coordination and competition for peak flight slots.
