POLICY WIRE — Washington, United States — A 47-year-old Afghan permanent resident from Texas was removed from the U.S. following a controversial legal process that marked the first use of a secretive federal court designed to handle cases involving noncitizens accused of terrorism.

The Justice Department labeled Nazira Haji Zada an “alien terrorist” and used the Alien Terrorist Removal Court (ATRC), established in 1996, to justify her removal. The court allows the government to deport individuals when classified evidence prevents traditional legal proceedings.

Haji Zada chose not to contest the decision, waiving her right to appeal. Her son and son-in-law were previously convicted for planning an ISIS-inspired attack during the 2024 election. The DOJ claims she supported their efforts, though she has never faced criminal charges. Attorney General Todd Blanche called the case a victory for national security and the rule of law.
