POLICY WIRE — Manchester, UK — A UK court sentenced Mohammad Bashir, 31, to life in prison on Thursday for his role in planning a terror attack alongside Jihad Al-Shamie, who carried out a deadly stabbing spree at a Manchester synagogue.

Al-Shamie launched a knife rampage targeting a mosque in Manchester last October, resulting in two fatalities. He was subsequently shot dead by police. Bashir pleaded guilty last month to the preparation of terrorist acts.

In August of the previous year, Bashir drove Al-Shamie on a reconnaissance trip to survey the UK’s Defence Ministry. Their intended target, however, remains undisclosed.

The court heard that Bashir and Al-Shamie had been in contact with known jihadists and had expressed a shared desire to commit acts of terror. Bashir’s sentencing concludes a high-profile case that has drawn attention to the threat of domestic terrorism in the UK.
