AARP Projects 3.6% Social Security COLA for 2027 Amid Inflation Concerns
AARP forecasts 3.6% Social Security COLA for 2027 as inflation remains high, impacting millions of retirees.
POLICY WIRE — Washington, D.C. — A new projection from AARP suggests the 2027 cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) for Social Security recipients could rise to 3.6%, driven by persistent inflation in August.
The estimate, based on the latest Consumer Price Index data released on Wednesday, marks a slight increase from the group’s previous forecast of 3.5%. Other advocacy groups, such as the Senior Citizens League, are predicting a slightly lower 3.5% adjustment, down from an earlier estimate of 3.6%.

If approved, the 3.6% increase would be the largest annual raise since 2023. With over 70 million beneficiaries, the adjustment is crucial for maintaining purchasing power amid rising costs. The average monthly benefit for a retired worker is currently $2,071, and a 3.6% COLA would add approximately $75, bringing the total to around $2,146 by early 2027. The official COLA will be announced on October 14, following the release of the September CPI report.
