The region of Jammu and Kashmir, particularly Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), continues to face an unrelenting wave of oppression under India’s fascist policies since 1947. Recent events from April 2025 have once again highlighted the brutal tactics used by the Indian government to suppress the Kashmiri people, undermining their rights, freedoms, and aspirations for self-determination. These actions are nothing short of inhuman and have drawn widespread international condemnation. Yet, the world remains disturbingly silent in the face of India’s ongoing atrocities in the region.
The recent clashes in Kishtwar, which resulted in the death of militants and an Indian soldier, are a stark reminder of the ongoing militarization of Jammu and Kashmir. India’s persistent use of violence as a tool to silence dissent is not only an affront to human rights but also an act of aggression against the Kashmiri people’s quest for freedom. The so-called ‘counterinsurgency’ operations are nothing more than an excuse to target the innocent, terrorize communities, and suppress any opposition to India’s unlawful occupation of the region.
While India claims to be fighting for peace and stability, the reality is that its forces are embroiled in a campaign of fear and violence. The crackdown on civilians- through arbitrary arrests, detentions, and executions- has become a daily reality for Kashmiris. These actions, justified under the guise of national security, serve only to perpetuate the suffering and oppression of a people who have been denied their basic rights for decades.
Political Repression and Silencing Dissent
India’s political repression in IIOJK is equally appalling. The All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC), the legitimate political voice of Kashmir’s resistance, has been subjected to constant harassment. Leaders are arbitrarily detained, their voices silenced, and their right to free speech brutally curtailed. House raids, prolonged detentions without trial, and inhuman treatment of political prisoners are commonplace in the region. This is the reality for any individual or group that dares to challenge India’s stranglehold on the region.
The Indian government’s insistence on portraying these actions as necessary for ‘law and order’ is nothing but a facade. The truth is that the repression is systemic, designed to crush the spirit of resistance and force the Kashmiri people into submission. This brutal approach not only violates international law but also undermines India’s credibility as a democratic nation that claims to value human rights.
Environmental Destruction: Another Facet of Oppression
The destruction of the environment in IIOJK is another grievous aspect of India’s occupation. Reports have emerged that Indian forces have set forest fires and destroyed fruit orchards in an effort to displace local communities and break the region’s deep-rooted cultural identity. These actions are not only an attack on Kashmir’s agrarian economy but also an attempt to erase the cultural heritage of the Kashmiri people.
The deliberate destruction of resources that sustain the local population is a clear strategy aimed at weakening the Kashmiri resistance. By targeting the very foundations of Kashmiri life—its land, its culture, and its environment- India hopes to instill fear and force the people into submission. However, what India fails to realize is that no amount of violence or environmental destruction can extinguish the flame of Kashmiri resistance. It only strengthens the resolve of those who seek justice and independence.
While the Indian government continues to commit these atrocities, the international community has, for the most part, turned a blind eye to the suffering in Jammu and Kashmir. Calls for justice from international human rights organizations and Kashmiri activists have been met with indifference, as global powers continue to prioritize their strategic interests over the rights of the Kashmiri people.
The silence of the international community in the face of such blatant human rights violations is not just a failure of diplomacy; it is a betrayal of humanity. The world must no longer remain complicit in the Indian government’s brutal occupation of Jammu and Kashmir. It is time for the international community to demand accountability from India and stand in solidarity with the people of Kashmir, who have been enduring decades of violence, repression, and injustice.
The struggle for freedom in Jammu and Kashmir is far from over. The Kashmiri people, despite the overwhelming odds, continue to fight for their right to self-determination, their right to live with dignity, and their right to a future free from fear and oppression. India’s inhumane policies- rooted in fascism, militarization, and environmental destruction- cannot break their spirit.
It is time for the world to acknowledge the reality in Jammu and Kashmir and stand up against India’s unlawful occupation. The people of Kashmir deserve justice, freedom, and the right to determine their own future without the shackles of an oppressive foreign government. India’s policies in IIOJK must be condemned, and the calls for Kashmiri independence must be recognized as legitimate and necessary for peace and justice in the region.
