Pakistan from its creation has faced many challenges but since 2000, terrorism has been one of the major concerns on the security and stability of Pakistan The recent terrorist attack in Pakistan on 11 March 2025 in Bolan Balochistan on Jaffar Express, has once again highlighted the persistent threat of violence and extremism in the region. The attack serves as a grim reminder of ongoing challenges faced in the fight against terrorism and the broader implications for peace and stability in the region as earlier. The incident sparked national outrage and deep sorrow quickly, becoming a focal point of discussion for international and national media.
On 11 March, the BLA (Baloch Liberation Army) attacked the 3 soldiers by attacking their check post, and then a passenger train named Jaffar Express with 9 bogies, which was travelling from Quetta to Peshawar was attacked by the BLA. Firstly, they used the explosive device on the railway track to disfunction the train and then opened fire directly on the train which was countered by the Railway police and security but after an hour BLA hijacked the train and demanded the release of its militants to be set free in next 48 hours otherwise they will kill the hostages. Within an hour Pakistani Army and Air Force took immediate measures to monitor the situation and make a strategy to counter it back without negotiation, as a strong military of the strong nation they never surrender to such demands even if they have to sacrifice themselves to protect their nation.
As they hijacked the train BLA militants shouted at passengers to come out of the train except for women and children, otherwise they would shoot them, when they came out, BLA asked them to be divided into groups based on ethnicity and released a group in the night, after 8 hours of imprisonment, BLA ordered them to go straight and not to look back otherwise they will shoot them. Those who caught this opportunity ran towards the nearest railway station which was 6 km far away.
After that BLA claimed different numbers of causalities of hostages with multiple time social media posts on their channel Hakakai on Twitter and demanded the negotiation to release of militants who were in prison, yet didn’t get any response which led them to frustration and anger. Security Agencies were monitoring the area and suggested taking precautionary measures as there were suicide bombers with hostages, so they waited for the right time in the morning of 12 March, military snipers with a great efficiency killed the militants, which sparked a chance for hostages to run from that area and was rescued by the troops later.
The last hit was done by the Zarrar Company an Army Special Service unit that cleared the ground with a huge proficiency that not a single hostage was injured in that rescue operation and all suicide bombers were eliminated first to eliminate any chance of massive loss. The immediate and efficient operation which was named Green Bolan by military forces took 36 hours to rescue their people but from 440 passengers 354 were rescued,37 were injured and 26 got killed by the militants from which 18 were army personnel, 5 were citizens and 3 were railway and other security officials. Few of the passengers who were rescued were shown after a long time as they ran in different directions to save their life so they came back to different stations after a long time. These statistics show how efficiently the Army and Air Force collaborate to save maximum lives.
Foreign media BBC, Indian Express, CNN, and Aljazeera provided a global perspective on the Jaffar Express tragedy, focusing on several casualties and passengers and framing the ongoing separatist movement led by the terrorist group, BLA as they demanded the release of their militants.
Foreign media showed different statistics of passengers as the news broke out about the incident Aljazeera told 400 passengers on the train, that 25 people got executed by BLA of which 4 were soldiers and 33 militants were killed by the security forces. BBC said that 440 passengers were there from which 300 were rescued and 27 militants were killed. However, they wrote that an official source told them about the presence of 100 security forces personnel in the hostages. Vice versa CNN said that there were 450 passengers, 350 were rescued, 27 hostages were killed including a soldier, and 35 militants were killed. The Indian Express showed that 500 passengers were there,300 were rescued, 21 hostages got killed and in counter operation done by security forces, 33 militants got killed. These statistics given by these platforms differ from each other as they were told by all of them when an official press conference by Director General ISPR Lt Gen Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry was not yet there to clarify the sky.
The number of causalities in different attacks by BLA especially on soldiers and Chinese workers was also given in their publication, a video clip of a reporter by Aljazeera that people are criticizing the forces that if 100 intelligence operations are led by the security forces then why they were unaware of this incident, show that in that time when there should be a big hand of applause for forces to carry that kind of instant operation they were giving new dimensions to people to get an unrealistic approach which was later cleared by the press conference of DG ISPR that in 2014, National Action plan was formed to deal with all threats, especially to counter-terrorism, for which security forces and stakeholders all will work together to eliminate terrorism in Pakistan. All the points were shown to the media to make it clear that the points which include the intolerance of militancy are focused on by the security forces and they are working on it as statistics are there that in 2024, 59775 intelligence-based operations were done and this year till now 11664 operations were done. Hence, security forces are doing 10080 intelligence operations per day. 1250 militants were killed in these two years and 563 soldiers were killed. These statistics are enough to tell what the security forces are doing to eliminate terrorism, but the other 13 points for which media and other stakeholders are responsible for joining hands in demolishing terrorism are not yet fulfilled as it is to be.
CNN also wrote about the Gwadar port leased to China as a cause of the grievousness of the Baloch liberation army and also wrote the project the next Dubai as a nightmare for Chinese workers as they got killed by BLA.
The Indian traditional and social media were engaged in digital warfare where they were giving fake information about incidents, they showed a train set on fire as it was an incident of the past, a helicopter crash that was visual from an old incident in another country such type of misinformation was led by the Indian media which is also showing their strategy to sponsor the BLA. Especially the traditional media showed the claim made by BLA on Saturday just after the press conference of DG ISPR on Friday, that they had killed the 214 hostages who were army personnel as their demands were not fulfilled. If this claim is true then why they didn’t provide any picture or any evidence to Indian media as they were showing their news? Secondly, their claim is not genuine as DG ISPR already told in his press brief that as the train got hijacked the forces were deployed in the area within an hour to counter the situation at that time all the militants were there, holding the hostages outside the train including suicide bombers in them. After a few hours, a larger group of militants moved back to the mountainous area towards their hideouts, leaving small groups behind the security forces didn’t attack at that time as hostages were seated with suicide bombers any unmeasured step resulted in the death of innocent people. His statement regarding the militant movement within the area gives the idea that those who were left behind, all 33 were killed but those who moved towards their hides out did not have any hostages.
Domestic media provided information with great responsibility as the Dawn and Geo news gave the statistics and reports as those were told by the officials with credibility and showed the videos of survivors who were praising the efforts of Armed Forces for rescuing them and providing them assistance after the rescue.
After this horrifying incident, Pakistani nationals were thankful to its security forces for doing an immediate operation to rescue them as the train driver was interrogated by the media about the incident and he proudly said that forces rescued them with great efficiency.
The Pakistani government and military have taken measures to counter such incidents by asking Afghanistan not to be the launching pad for terrorism in Pakistan as the militants were continuously in contact with their handlers in Afghanistan and secondly, they exposed the Indian media’s false narratives and information regarding Jaffar Express and BLA demands and posts shared by the Indian media clearly show that it is sponsoring the BLA.
As DG ISPR Lt Gen Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry said:
“We will deal with them as they deserve. We will take them on, their facilitators, their abettors, whether inside Pakistan or outside Pakistan,”
This is a clear message that Pakistan would not bear any threat or attack on its security, sovereignty, and on its people. This incident showed the strength of Pakistan’s defense forces to counter any unwanted situation in and out of territory. Pakistani people and other nations are now describing BLA as not a separatist group but a separatist group that could kill any innocent person to fulfill their demands.
