The blood of Pakistan swells with grief into a farewell to the young heroic son of the soil Major Adnan Aslam Shaheed whose life was taken away in the line of duty. He ultimately made his final sacrifice at the age of 31 years trying to protect the country when it was attacked by a coward in Bannu on 2 September 2025. His death is another lesson that peace has a cost and that there is an impenetrable wall between us and our enemies who would destroy our country.
The sober atmosphere that prevailed at his funeral prayers at Chaklala, Rawalpindi, was not only the heart ache of his family members, but also the heart ache of a whole nation. Ordinary citizens were shoulder to shoulder with leaders of the country to honor him. Among them was the Prime Minister, Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, who acted as a leader of the nation in its grief, and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, whose attendance had the gravitas of an unchanging military leadership which has no intention of surrendering to terrorism.
The story of Major Adnan is an account of unswerving courage. Although he sustained injuries that were life threatening when he was attacked, he decided to lead his men on the frontline, and he did so with such bravery that few people have the energy to do. His sacrifice was already imprinted in the hearts of Pakistanis even when he was lying in treatment at the Combined Military Hospital. His martyrdom is not merely the death of a young soldier, but a wake-up call of the fortitude that makes our military personnel. He had with him the spirit of sacrifice which has kept this country safe since its beginning.
The comments made by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in honoring the memory of Major Adnan were touching and noble. The premier appealed to the heart of millions of Pakistanis by referring to him as a brave son of the soil. His words sounded more like a father comforting his weeping children at a time when the country required unity. Shehbaz Sharif has all along demonstrated his profound respect to the martyrs of this nation and his message is a reassurance to the families of the armed forces that their blood will never go to waste, and their death will always be remembered.
The most potent presence at the funeral was that of Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, the Army Chief whose leadership represents the iron will of Pakistan. His steady determination is a hope to all soldiers in uniform. The Pakistan Army under his command has, besides fighting terrorism with an iron fist, also instilled the confidence of a nation in search of stability. The leadership of Asim Munir is not just about military prowess but a vision of Pakistan in which peace and security cannot be compromised. The way he honors the families of martyrs, personally experiences the loss, and takes their legacy as his own makes him an unparalleled leader.
The sacrifice of Major Adnan is also an indication that Pakistan continues to grapple with an existential conflict. The Indian proxy group Fitna al Khawarij that led the cowardly attack in Bannu may think their actions can cripple us, but they do not realize that the people of Pakistan and their protectors are inseparable. Every martyrdom is a fortification of our determination, every death prayer makes us one, and every tear of the nation becomes a pledge of perseverance.
This year has already tested Pakistan with sacrifices from our armed forces. In April 2025, intelligence-based operations across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa resulted in 15 terrorists being eliminated and, tragically, 2 soldiers martyred while conducting those operations. In early May, during a period of cross-border strikes and intense confrontation, Pakistan’s military reported that 11 military personnel were martyred and 78 were wounded while defending the country; the same period saw heavy civilian tolls reported by authorities, 40 civilians killed and 121 injured. Additionally, separate counter-infiltration actions in North Waziristan and other border districts saw large numbers of militants neutralised, underscoring the scale and gravity of the security challenge faced this year.
This is when leadership is most needed during the time of national mourning. The voices of the steady Shehbaz Sharif as Prime Minister and towering Field Marshal Asim Munir are two of the pillars supporting the nation despite the hard times. Their presence at the funeral of Major Adnan was not only a ritual but a commitment to the people that the war against terrorism in Pakistan will be waged even harder, and the legacy of our martyrs will see the light of day.
The shahadat made by Major Adnan Aslam is not the final part of his life but a legacy. Pakistanis will always remember his name as the symbol of bravery and patriotism. His martyrdom, along with that of thousands preceding him, is the basis on which Pakistan is built. To his family, words can never be able to fill the gap, but the country is with them in their pride and reverence.
Ultimately, the quest of Major Adnan Shaheed teaches us that heroes do not exist based on their longevity, but rather the level of inspiration they impart in others. Pakistan praises its courageous son. Under the leadership of people like Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif who lead us with kindness and Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir who lead us with no equal measure, the sacrifices of our martyrs will not be forgotten. Their blood is the writing material that tells of a stronger, united, and resolved Pakistan.
