Leaked Rosstat Records Reveal Up to 450,000 Russian Deaths in Ukraine Conflict
Hacked data from Russia's state statistics agency reveals over 450,000 deaths linked to the Ukraine war, marking an accelerating casualty rate.
POLICY WIRE — Moscow, Russia — A massive data breach at Russia’s state statistics agency, Rosstat, has exposed staggering casualty figures related to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
According to the leaked registry records, which include over 11 million death certificates, the Russian government has officially recorded approximately 400,000 of its citizens killed since the full-scale invasion began nearly five years ago.
However, separate analysis by hacker groups Belarusian Cyberpartisans and Silent Crow, claimed responsibility for the cyberattack on the Federal State Statistics Service, suggests the toll may be even higher.
The collectives announced on November 7 that the stolen data indicates that between 394,000 and 450,000 individuals fighting for Russia or otherwise connected to the war effort have perished.
These leaked figures would mean that the conflict has become the fourth deadliest war in the country’s history, with the rate of death showing signs of significant acceleration.
Rosstat is currently struggling to restore its internal systems following the major cyberattack that resulted in the exposure of these sensitive government records.
