Dame Judi Dench Reveals Struggles with Vision Loss and Why She Still Prefers Theater Over Film
At 91, legendary actress Dame Judi Dench shares her journey deailing with macular degeneration and why her heart remains with the magic of the stage.
POLICY WIRE — London, UK — At 91 years old, the legendary Dame Judi Dench remains sharp and witty, despite facing significant challenges with her failing eyesight. During a recent game of Bananagrams with a friend, the actress joked about hoarding all the available vowels, telling her companion not to expect any from her hand because she had claimed them all.
Despite her mental agility, Dench admitted that she struggles to actually see the letters on the board. She noted that the game is particularly difficult when playing with someone who is almost blind, as her vision has been severely compromised by macular degeneration.
While her physical eyesight is fading, Dench’s passion for her craft remains undiminished. Her storied career began on the stage in 1957 when she performed as Ophelia in Hamlet at London’s Old Vic Theatre. Although she did not land her first leading film role until four decades later in the movie Mrs. Brown, she has always maintained that her true loyalty lies to live performance.
When asked why she is so drawn to the theater compared to cinema, Dench explained that she loves the collective energy of a group of people working together to improve their show every single night. She contrasted this with film production, noting that once a director calls for cut, there is no further opportunity to make the work better.
Her preference for the stage was reinforced by an early rejection in the film industry. She recalled a meeting where a movie producer told her she had everything wrong with her face. Dench said she simply agreed with him, walked out, and returned to what she considered the glorious environment of the Old Vic.
She remarked that the early criticism did not truly affect her because she had no intention of pursuing a film career at that time. However, she admitted that the comments likely stayed with her on a subconscious level, processed by her inner self over the years.
Ultimately, the face the producer criticized became one of the most recognizable in cinematic history. Dench has earned eight Academy Award nominations and won an Oscar for her iconic portrayal of Queen Elizabeth I.
