British Columbia officials search for grizzly bears after a fatal attack kills Jennifer Balcarras and her daughter Selah near Bella Coola trails.
POLICY WIRE — Bella Coola, Canada — A quiet community in British Columbia is in mourning following a deadly grizzly bear encounter that claimed the lives of a mother and daughter during a weekend hike.
Authorities identified the victims as Balcarras, 48, and her 20-year-old daughter, Selah, who were discovered on the Snooka West Trail on Monday. The British Columbia Conservation Officer Services (BCCOS) confirmed that evidence at the scene indicates the pair was killed in a bear attack.
The tragedy occurred while the pair was out on what was described as a casual walk on a local woodland trail. Their disappearance sparked a search that ended with the grim discovery of their bodies.
In response to the violent encounter, the Nuxalk Nation issued a safety advisory for local residents. People were urged to remain indoors by 8 p.m. PCT to ensure their safety while the threat remains active.
This incident marks the second fatal grizzly bear attack in the Bella Coola area within less than a year. The frequency of such events has left the community seeking answers regarding the presence of large predators nearby.
Conservation officers are currently actively searching for the grizzly bear responsible for the fatal attack. One grizzly bear has already been captured and is undergoing DNA testing to determine if it was the specific individual involved in the deaths.
