Russia Accelerates Rassvet Satellite Deployment to Bolster Military Comms in Ukraine
Ukraine intelligence reveals Russia is rapidly deploying the Rassvet satellite network to improve military drone accuracy and communications during the war.
POLICY WIRE — Kyiv, Ukraine — Russia is fasttracking the launch of its domestic satellite communications infrastructure, moving at a pace that exceeds previous intelligence projections suggested.
Major General Vadym Skibitskyi, the deputy chief of Ukraine’s military intelligence, stated on August 10 that Moscow is actively implementing the Rassvet system as a functional analogue to the American Starlink service.
The Russian government aims to have a constellation of nearly 300 satellites in orbit by the year 2027 to ensure its connectivity capabilities.
Currently, the Rassvet network is being utilized for military-grade communications over Ukrainian territory. The technology is intended to enhance the precision and effectiveness of Russian strike drones.
While the system currently provides only several hours of coverage over the region, Russia plans for a rapid expansion of the satellite fleet over the coming years.
Like the Starlink network, these low-orbit satellites are designed for high-speed data transmission, which offers significant advantages for modern military operations.
