POLICY WIRE — Milan, Italy — A wave of bomb threats hit more than a dozen aircraft across Europe on Thursday, forcing several planes to land unexpectedly and drawing military escorts in some cases.
Authorities reported that two passenger jets bound for Warsaw, a Ryanair service from London to Spain, two separate flights headed to Rome, and a flight traveling from Israel to Sofia were all placed on high alert.
Later on Friday, a Ryanair flight operating from Rome to Lisbon received a security warning after an anonymous call, prompting crews to follow precautionary procedures.
In each instance, bomb squads examined the aircraft and found no hazardous devices, allowing passengers to continue to their destinations after thorough checks.
Aviation security analysts noted a pattern of hoax calls targeting airlines this week, suggesting coordinated attempts to disrupt European air travel, though no group has claimed responsibility.
