Colombian police arrested a Mexican judge accused of taking a $2 million bribe to free a key associate linked to former Olympian Ryan Wedding.
POLICY WIRE — Mexico City, Colombia — Colombian law enforcement has apprehended a Mexican judge who was sought after by United States authorities for alleged involvement in a massive bribery scheme.
According to the U.S. Department of Justice, the judge is accused of accepting a $2 million payment in exchange for the release of a prominent Canadian drug trafficker.
The detained individual is identified as a high-level associate within a criminal network led by former Olympic snowboarder Ryan Wedding.
A Homeland Security Task Force led the operation to track the judge to Colombia, where local authorities executed the arrest on Thursday.
Federal prosecutors allege that the judge used his judicial position to influence legal proceedings and ensure the Canadian suspect was allowed to go from custody.
