POLICY WIRE — RICHMOND, Virginia — Democrat Shannon Taylor secured a decisive victory in Virginia’s 1st Congressional District on Thursday, unsetting long-serving Republican incumbent Rob J. Wittman.
Taylor, who serves as the Commonwealth’s Attorney for Henrico County, outperformed Wittman by approximately 9,500 votes. The margin represents a 51% to 48.7% split, ensuring the results will not be subject to a formal recount.
Wittman had been a fixture in the House of Representatives for nearly two decades, having first been elected to the seat in 2007. His defeat marks a significant shift in the regional landscape as voter frustration impacted the district.
Throughout the campaign, Taylor leaned on her experience as a law-and-order prosecutor based in the Richmond suburbs. Her performance in Henrico County proved pivotal to her winning coalition.
Taylor’s win contributes to a broader trend of Democratic gains across the nation, even as Republican candidates managed to maintain their positions in Virginia’s 5th District.
