British Adventurer Returns Home After 28-Year, 50,000km Global Trek
Karl Bushby arrives back in Hull after an epic 50,000km walk around the world. Discover the incredible story of the Goliath Expedition survivor.
POLICY WIRE — Hull, England — A British explorer has finally reached the end of a nearly three-decade journey on around the globe. The 57-year-old Karl Bushby was warmly greeted by his mother, Angela, outside their terraced home on Monday beneath a banner that read ‘Welcome Home Son’.
A massive crowd of supporters gathered in the city center to celebrate his arrival before he began the final leg of his journey. Addressing the waiting spectators, Bushby joked about apologizing for making them wait and asked if the journey was truly finished.
The trek, known as the Goliath Expedition, began in November 1998 in Punta Arenas, southern Chile. Starting with only a tent, a few hundred dollars, and a basic plastic camera, Bushby set out to return to his hometown without ever using any motorized transportation.
His grueling route took him northward through the Americas and across the frozen Bering Strait from Alaska into Russia. He then traveled through Mongolia and China, including a swim across the Caspian Sea before heading toward Europe.
Along the way, the adventurer navigated the dense Darien Gap between Colombia and Panama, faced detention in Russia, and struggled with persistent visa and funding hurdles. The 2008 global financial crisis deprived him of major sponsorship, causing delays that transformed his original 12-year plan into a 28-year odyssey.
Last month, Bushby cleared his final major obstacle by swimming across the English Channel to begin the last walk home. Upon his arrival in Hull, he noted that while people say it takes a village, it literally took the entire world to get him back. He credited the kindness of everyone from individual strangers to nation-states, stating he did not do this alone but was supported by the biggest team: Earth.
A feature-length documentary documenting the expedition is currently in production, and Bushby intends to launch a speaking tour across England in the coming weeks. Reporting by Policy-Wire (PW)
