Emergency Evacuation For 200 Over Tower Block Structural Cracks In East London
Over 200 residents fled 3 east London towers amidst emergency evacuation after engineers identified potentially disastrous structural cracks.
POLICY WIRE — London, UK — More than 200 residents were forced to evict their homes in three tower blocks located in Canning Town. The mass displacement occurred in the early hours of Friday after a structural warning was issued.
Emergency exit orders were directed to tenants residing inside Centurion Tower, St Vincent Court, and Sovereign Tower. The London Fire Brigade alerted emergency services after a dangerous crack appeared in the structures.
Serious structural defects in the properties rendered the 211 flats immediately uninhabitable. Engineers from the London Fire Brigade assessed the cracks and subsequently mandated the full withdrawal of all residents.
While one publication noted that some of the units were valued at £335,000, others in the same neighborhood were subject to displacement due to a closely related separate evacuation of Caxton Works. A cohort of roughly 200 families left the nine years in operation facility in the past days following assessment that documented serious transfer slab structural defects.
Since the spread of the tower crisis, authorities have ordered urgent remedial works on the buildings previously evacuated in the east London region.
Emergency contingency support has been provided to displaced householders by Newham Council in the immediate aftermath.
