Trump Signals ‘Veto’ Defiance Following Massive Democratic Sweep in Midterm Elections
President Donald Trump threatens to use his veto power to block legislation after Democrats seized control of the House and Senate in historic midterms.
POLICY WIRE — Washington, D.C. — President Donald Trump is preparing to utilize his remaining executive authority to resist lawmakers after Democrats secured control of both chambers of Congress. Facing a transition into what is traditionally a lame-duck period, the president has signaled his intent to systematically reject bills put forward by the incoming Democratic-led legislature.
The defiance followed election results that saw Republican losses in traditionally loyal-party strongholds, including Texas, Nebraska, Iowa, and South Carolina. In response to the results, Trump shared an image of his signature red baseball cap on Truth Social featuring a single word: ‘Veto.’
The post highlighted the president’s constitutional authority to reject legislation passed by the House and Senate. Throughout his two terms in the White House, Trump has utilized this specific power on 12 occasions.
During a late-night interview with Fox News anchor Brett Baier on Wednesday, Trump explained strategy behind the move. He stated that the veto remains one of the most potent tools available to a president, noting that lawmakers would likely submit ‘insane’ proposals that he would subsequently block.
The president suggested that after several months of rejections, the opposition would eventually seek cooperation to move their agenda forward. Trump noted that he maintains relationships with several Democratic lawmakers and indicated that the new majority is likely eager to negotiate. He described the veto power as ‘impervious.’
