Democrat Rebecca Bennett Ousts Tom Kean Jr. in New Jersey Midterm Upset
Rebecca Bennett defeats Republican incumbent Tom Kean Jr. in NJ's 7th District as midterm results show a major shift over economy and foreign policy.
POLICY WIRE — New Jersey, USA — Democrat Rebecca Bennett has secured a victory to represent New Jersey’s 7th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives, unsetting Republican Thomas H. Kean Jr. on Tuesday.
Bennett, who previously served as a helicopter pilot for the U.S. Navy, managed to flip the Republican seat by tapping into voter frustration regarding the cost of living.
Her campaign also pushed for an immediate cessation of the conflict in Iran and advocated for Congress to limit the import tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump.
The district, which features the President’s Bedminster golf club, has emerged as a political flashpoint, shifting party control in both of the previous two midterm cycles.
Kean, who was viewed as the most precarious Republican in the state’s congressional delegation, had originally won the seat from a Democratic incumbent in 2022.
In the 2024 presidential race, Trump carried this specific district by a narrow margin of 1.2 percentage points.
Following a night of significant losses for the Republican party, President Trump posted on Truth Social that he claimed that the party would have achieved a landslide victory had he been present on the ballot himself.
Kean’s loss comes after a difficult year during which he was absent from the public eye for several months and failed to cast more over 100 votes in Congress.
The 57-year-old representative eventually revealed this summer that he had been battling depression, a disclosure that had sparked intense public speculation about his well-being.
Upon returning to the House floor, Kean explained that the illness is both physical and emotional, noting that the power of the condition is hard to grasp until one has experienced it personally.
