33 Killed as Russian Bombs Hit Ukrainian School Shelter in Zaporizhzhia
Russian airstrikes on a school used as a humanitarian hub in Komyshuvakha, Zaporizhzhia killed at least 33 people and left dozens trapped, officials say.
POLICY WIRE — Komyshuvakha, Ukraine — A Russian airstrike that dropped at least nine bombs on a school used as an aid distribution point left a death toll of at least 33 people on Nov. 2, 2026.
The school, located in the village of Komyshuvakha in the southeastern Zaporizhzhia Oblast, had been sheltering civilians and serving as a humanitarian hub when the bombs struck.
Ukrainian officials said the explosion collapsed part of the building, killing dozens and potentially trapping more than 50 individuals beneath the rubble.
President Volodymyr Zelensky, speaking at a press briefing in Berlin, confirmed the 33 fatalities and warned that many victims remain missing as rescue crews continue searching.
Komyshuvakha lies only a short distance from the active front line, making it vulnerable to frequent Russian shelling and aerial attacks.
Initial reports from other outlets listed the death count at 31, but Ukrainian authorities have since updated the figure to 33 as the situation unfolded.
The strike on a civilian shelter marks one of the deadliest attacks on a humanitarian site in the ongoing conflict, raising renewed concerns about the safety of aid centers near combat zones.
