Giana Dettloff, a 19-year-old cheerleader, was killed in a Bloomington, IL mass shooting. Nine others were injured as police seek missing suspects.
POLICY WIRE — Bloomington, Illinois — A deadly mass shooting at an off-campus Halloween celebration near Illinois Wesleyan University has claimed the life of a 19-year-old college cheerleader, leaving eight others injured in a violent incident that unfolded in the early hours of Sunday morning.
Authorities identified the victim as Giana Dettloff, a freshman attending North Central College in Naperville. At the time of the attack, Dettloff was visiting her best friend in Bloomington when gunfire erupted at approximately 1:20 a.m., according to the Bloomington Police Department.
McLean County Coroner Kathleen Yoder confirmed during a Monday press conference that Dettloff, a native of Carol Stream, was pronounced dead at the scene after sustaining multiple gunshot wounds to her chest and pelvic area. Yoder noted that there was no indication of close-range firing in the case.
Medical toxicology results remain pending as investigators continue to process the details surrounding the fatal incident. While no suspects have been arrested, police officials stated on Tuesday that the case remains active.
Nine other individuals were struck by bullets during the chaos, with victims ranging in age from 16 to 22 years old. The injured include students from Illinois Wesleyan University, Illinois State University, and Quincy University, as well as several teenagers residing in the Chicago suburbs.
Initial reports suggested eight victims, but authorities revealed on Monday that an additional person suffered a non-life-threatening gunshot wound, bringing the total number of people shot to nine.
The injuries sustained by survivors included wounds to the arms, legs, chest, and abdomen. While several victims were initially in critical condition, they were later stabilized by medical personnel.
Investigators indicated that many of those injured did not know each other prior to the shooting. The random nature of the violence has left a local community in shock as recovery efforts continue.
Bloomington Police Chief Jamal Simington addressed the tragedy in a statement, noting that Dettloff was her parents’ only child. He described the emotional toll on the family, stating that witnessing their grief was a profound experience for law enforcement personnel.
“For a parent, sending a child off to college is filled with pride, hope, and excitement for the journey ahead. To have that journey cut short in such a tragic way is a parent’s worst nightmare. Our hearts are with Giana’s family, friends, and everyone impacted by this tragedy,” Chief Simington said.
He further urged the community to support the victim’s loved ones by keeping them in their thoughts and respecting their privacy during this devastating time.
Dettloff’s death has triggered a wave of tributes from her educational institutions. North Central College President Abiódún Gòkè-Paríolá confirmed on Tuesday via Facebook that Dettloff was an active member of the school’s cheerleading squad.
“No words can ease the pain of her loss, but please know that we mourn with you and are here to support you. Our hearts are also with those injured in the shooting and their loved ones,” President Gòkè-Paríolá shared in his statement.
Her former high school team at Glenbard North High School also honored her memory on social media, describing her as a sweet and caring soul who positively influenced the community.
“She respected others and made our school a better place. Her impact will not be forgotten,” the Glenbard North team wrote in their tribute.
Dettloff’s family characterized her as a bright, athletic young woman with a promising future ahead of her. They expressed deep sorrow over her untimely passing, asking for continued support during their time of mourning.
Law enforcement is appealing to the public for assistance in solving the case. Anyone with surveillance footage or information regarding events in the area around the time of the shooting is asked to contact Bloomington Detective Pedro Diaz at 309-434-2532 or via email at [email protected].
