Reddit and Rights Group Sue Australia Over Controversial Under-16 Social Media Ban
Reddit and an advocacy group challenge Australia's landmark social media ban for minors in the High Court, citing constitutional rights and privacy concerns.
POLICY WIRE — Canberra, Australia — Australia’s pioneering legislation designed to block users under 16 from social media is facing its first significant legal hurdle this Tuesday.
The online forum Reddit and a digital advocacy organization led by a libertarian politician have petitioned the High Court seeking to overturn the 2025 law.
The contested statute prohibits major social media platforms from hosting accounts for individuals who have not yet reached the age of 16.
In their legal filing, counsel for Reddit voiced sharp criticism of the government’s approach, characterizing the policy as both “inept” and ill-thought-out.
The plaintiffs argue that the restrictions placed on children regarding popular digital platforms constitute an infringement on their constitutional rights.
Beyond constitutional arguments, the challenge also raises concerns that the ban will create significant privacy issues and function as state censorship.
