POLICY WIRE — New York, U.S. — John Oliver recently revealed that the acclaimed documentary You Can See Everything has significantly disrupted operations at his studio. The 49-year-old host described the film’s impact as an unprecedented disruption to his team’s daily routine following its recent release.
During the Sunday episode of Last Week Tonight, Oliver characterized viewers as obsessed with the story of disgraced Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes and her partner, Billy Evans. He admitted to spending three hours reacting loudly to the two subjects, whom he described as individuals who have never blinked in their lives.
The former late-night host suggested that anyone interested in discussing the film should contact the show’s staff directly. Oliver noted that the documentary has derailed the workflow to an unacceptable degree, turning the subject into a dominant topic among his team.
Oliver introduced the film during a segment mocking a Republican Senate candidate’s evasive interview response. He compared the candidate’s behavior to that of Evans and Holmes in the movie, stating he had not seen someone dodge a question so shamelessly since watching the two figures in the documentary.
The documentary, directed by Lance Oppenheim and created by comic Nathan Fielder, chronicles the month before Holmes began her prison sentence in 2023. The project was filmed secretly over a span of three years, capturing moments in the life of Holmes and her family prior to her incarceration.
Holmes, who is 42, was convicted of fraud in 2022 after claims that her startup, Theranos, possessed a revolutionary medical device. The technology was said to diagnose various conditions using only a few drops of blood, a capability that was later proven false.
After being found guilty of duping investors with non-functional technology, Holmes received a sentence of 11 years in prison. She began serving her time at a facility in Texas in May 2023.
You Can See Everything originally debuted as a surprise entry at the Telluride Film Festival in September. Its wider release has since generated significant cultural and commercial attention.
The film shattered box office records upon its October 19 release, collecting $15 million in its opening weekend across North America. This figure was more than double the $7 million projection for the film.
This performance marked the second-highest opening for a non-musical documentary in more than 20 years. The commercial success has been accompanied by widespread critical acclaim.
Critics have labeled the movie a masterpiece, and it achieved a rare perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes following initial reviews. The positive reception extends to the comedy community, where peers have praised Fielder’s innovation.
Sacha Baron Cohen, creator of Borat, recently stated that the project reshaped the satirical mockumentary genre that he coined. Cohen noted that Fielder operated under a rule to avoid repeating any of his own previous work.
According to Cohen, Fielder would frequently state that they were going to do the stuff that Sacha would never do. This approach allowed the documentary to reinvent its specific genre of satire.
