Nationwide Campuses Mobilize for Take Back the Night Rally to Combat Campus Sexual Violence
Students across 79 U.S. universities join the National Take Back the Night rally to demand accountability for sexual violence on college campuses.
POLICY WIRE — National, USA — — Approximately 79 universities across the United States gathered on Sunday, November 1, to participate in the National Campus Take Back The Night Rally. This coordinated effort aims to confront and challenge the culture of sexual assault within higher education institutions.
The event, which took place across various time zones throughout the evening, saw students and community members uniting to express solidarity with survivors. The program featured powerful keynote speeches, public readings of survivor testimony, and optional marches through campus grounds to signal a stance against violence.
Sunday’s nationwide mobilization was largely catalyzed by a lawsuit filed by a former Cornell University student who alleged she had been raped. This high-profile case has sparked renewed demands for increased accountability from university administrators regarding how they handle sexual assault allegations.
At Cornell specifically, roughly 150 students assembled on Cross Campus to take part in the global movement. Similar demonstrations were organized at other major institutions, including Yale, the University of Chicago, Harvard, Stanford, UCLA, and the University of Hawaii.
According to data from the organization RAINN, approximately one in every eight college students experiences some form of sexual violence during their academic career. While protests of this nature have roots dating back the 1970s, organizers noted that the focus has evolved to address systemic issues on modern campuses.
In addition to the national rally, local events like the ‘We Are Jane’ rally were held in Clarksville to highlight the ongoing Cornell case and the broader struggle for safety in educational environments.
