Authorities confirm four US citizens among 69 killed in Spain train crash. Nationals from Japan, Canada, and others also deceased in deadliest rail accident.
POLICY WIRE — Madrid, Spain — Officials confirmed on Sunday that four American citizens were among the fatalities following the catastrophic high-speed rail collision that struck central Spain last week.
The death toll now stands at 69 people who lost their lives when one train slammed into the rear of another on Wednesday morning near Toledo.
Authorities identified one fatality from each of Canada, Japan, Argentina, Mexico, Tunisia, and the Czech Republic alongside the four US nationals.
The incident, described as one of the deadliest rail accidents in Europe this century, has resulted in more than 100 total casualties, including the deceased and those injured.
This crash marks the second disaster on the Madrid-Seville railway line this year, intensifying scrutiny over recent traffic control errors cited as the cause.
