One Dead, Eight Injured in Mass Shooting Following Alabama Magic City Classic
A deadly shooting left one dead and eight injured after the Magic City Classic in Birmingham, Alabama. Police detained a suspect and recovered weapons.
POLICY WIRE — Birmingham, Alabama — A violent shooting broke out following a major Saturday football game in Alabama, resulting in one fatality and injuries to eight other individuals.
The incident occurred near Legion Field shortly after the conclusion of the annual Magic City Classic. According to Police Chief Michael Pickett, the majority of families and spectators had already departed the stadium grounds when the gunfire began in the area along Graymont Avenue where local vendors were stationed.
Chief Pickett characterized the event as a “completely senseless act of violence” and expressed significant relief that the casualty toll was not higher.
The Birmingham police chief also noted that this type of violence is not confined to their city but is seen across the country, emphasizing the need for the community to address the ongoing crisis.
While the specific motives behind the shooting remain under investigation, police spokesperson De’Rell Freeman confirmed that one individual was detained and taken to headquarters for interrogation. Authorities also reported having located and secured multiple weapons at the scene.
The Magic City Classic features a long-standing rivalry between historically Black universities Alabama State and Alabama A&M, a matchup that has spanned over a century.
Approximately 70,000 fans gathered for Saturday’s contest, which Alabama A&M won with a final score of 31-28.
The game’s significant cultural history led Alabama State head coach Eddie Robinson Jr.—a former NFL linebacker and school alumnus—to suggest establishing a Hall of Fame dedicated to the event.
The violence in Birmingham was part of a broader trend of incidents reported across the nation over the Halloween weekend.
In Newark, Delaware, six people were reportedly shot shortly after 11:10 p.m. Saturday near the University of Delaware campus. Newark police Lt. Greg D’Elia stated that all six victims were taken to hospitals for medical care.
Social media footage from the Delaware incident showed individuals fleeing the area, prompting police to close a section of Main Street for several hours.
