Violence Erupts Across Germany as Economic Crisis Protests Lead to Store Looting
Massive demonstrations in Germany turn violent as rioters loot Frankfurt shops and clash with police using water cannons and Molotov cocktails.
POLICY WIRE — Frankfurt, Germany — Massive demonstrations against the rising cost of living spiraled into violence on Saturday, leading to widespread looting and clashes with authorities across Germany.
While tens of thousands of demonstrators originally gathered in major German cities to demand better education and lower living expenses, the situation deteriorated as masked individuals took hold.
In Frankfurt, the nation’s primary financial center, hooded rioters successfully broke into at least two stores while several other businesses suffered significant damage.
Local law enforcement confirmed that violent disturbances were ongoing in the city center, noting that shop windows had been smashed at multiple storefronts.
Police responded to the unrest by deploying water cannons against groups of youths who were observed throwing Molotov cocktails at officers.
The turmoil follows a broader wave of European unrest, with similar ‘Gen Z’ led movements occurring in France where hundreds of thousands of people also marched in protest of economic pressures.
