POLICY WIRE — Warsaw, Poland — Polish President Karol Nawrocki physically forced his way into the Constitutional Tribunal in Warsaw shortly after midnight on Saturday. He pushed through a crowd gathered at the entrance, an act accompanied by allegations that a coup was underway.
The confrontation occurred following the suspension of the court’s chief judge. This decision triggered an immediate and intense surge of rule-of-law tensions between the PiS-allied president and Prime Minister Donald Tusk. Hundreds of protesters surrounded the leader outside the facility in response to the judicial move.
Riot police were locked in a tense standoff with the demonstrators outside the constitutional court on Friday night. The security presence escalated as the dispute over the tribunal’s control deepened.
The incident forced an abrupt change to Nawrocki’s international itinerary. While en route to Senegal on a state trip, the president turned his plane around and returned home after police entered the top court.
On early Saturday, Nawrocki stated that the prolonged conflict with the Tusk government over the Constitutional Court now poses a threat to the country. The standoff marked the latest major escalation in a decade-long struggle over Poland’s judicial independence.
A video released overnight captured the chaotic scene of the entry. It showed Nawrocki struggling past individuals gathered at the doors, specifically including Anna Korwin-Piotrowska. The footage documented the physical resistance he faced during the incident.
