Melania Trump-Brokered Ceasefire Holds in Oleshky as Humanitarian Mission Begins
A six-day ceasefire in Oleshky, brokered by Melania Trump, holds for 30 hours as humanitarian aid reaches the city amid ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.
POLICY WIRE — Oleshky, Ukraine — A six-day ceasefire in the Russian-occupied southern Ukrainian city of Oleshky has successfully held for its first 30 hours, according to officials. The localized truce, which was brokered by U.S. first lady Melania Trump, is scheduled to remain in effect through Sunday.
The pause in hostilities is designed to facilitate a critical humanitarian operation aimed at delivering food and medicine to the approximately 2,000 residents remaining in the devastated city. Additionally, the window allows for the evacuation of civilians who wish to depart the area.
Should the ceasefire remain intact, it would mark the first significant truce observed by both sides since the Russian invasion began more than 4 ½ years ago. Previous efforts to establish such pauses have historically failed or collapsed shortly after implementation.
The current development aligns with U.S.-led initiatives to convene Russian and Ukrainian officials next month for technical discussions regarding the war’s conclusion, despite both nations maintaining firm stances on their primary demands. Both sides are reportedly seeking to gain favor with President Donald Trump as he pursues a potential peace settlement.
Russian ombudsperson Yana Lantratova and Ukrainian human rights ombudsperson Dmytro Lubinets confirmed on Wednesday that no violations had occurred in Oleshky during the first 30 hours. Lantratova noted that the personal involvement of the U.S. first lady is of great importance to the entire process.
Pope Leo XIV also engaged in discussions this month with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin, advocating for the safe passage of humanitarian aid and civilians. Zelenskyy expressed his gratitude for the efforts to halt the fighting, stating, “We are grateful that they are organizing this possibility to evacuate people,” and confirmed that Ukraine is prepared to receive those leaving the town.
Despite the localized success in Oleshky, conflict continues elsewhere. A Russian drone strike in the northeastern city of Kharkiv injured five people, including a four-year-old child, and ignited fires in residential and industrial buildings. Simultaneously, the Russian Defense Ministry reported that its air defenses intercepted 531 Ukrainian drones between late Tuesday and early Wednesday, resulting in five injuries and damage to infrastructure across two regions.
