Reliance Jio Shares Surge 21% in Landmark Mumbai Market Debut
Billionaire Mukesh Ambani's Jio Platforms jumps 21% in its Mumbai stock market debut following a record-breaking $3.2 billion initial public offering.
POLICY WIRE — Mumbai, India — Shares of Reliance Jio Platforms experienced a dramatic 21% surge during their Wednesday debut on the Mumbai stock exchange. This strong market entry follows the company’s record-breaking $3.2 billion initial public offering, establishing the firm as India’s second-largest company with a market valuation of approximately $131.5 billion.
Jio, which maintains a massive subscriber base of over 530 million customers, is supported by major global investors including Meta Platforms and Alphabet’s Google. In terms of single-country subscriber volume, the company currently ranks second globally, trailing only China Mobile.
This listing marks the first time in two decades that the Reliance conglomerate has brought a business to the public market. The move is central to Mukesh Ambani’s broader strategy of transforming Reliance from an oil-and-chemicals giant into a diversified technology and consumer products powerhouse.
The debut ceremony at the National Stock Exchange featured Mukesh Ambani alongside his wife, Nita Ambani, and their children, Akash, Isha, and Anant. During the event, an emotional Mukesh Ambani watched as his son Anant delivered a speech reflecting on the historical journey and legacy of both Reliance and Jio.
Trading commenced at 1,358 rupees per share, significantly higher than the initial offer price of 1,119 rupees. With this valuation, Jio successfully surpassed both Bharti Airtel and HDFC Bank to become the second-largest firm in India by market capitalization.
While many brokerages remain optimistic about the stock’s future performance, analysts have cautioned that the company faces challenges. Key concerns include intense market competition, substantial capital expenditure requirements, and potential shifts in Indian telecom regulations regarding licensing, spectrum, and associated fees.
Kranthi Bathini, an equity strategist at WealthMills Securities, noted that Jio achieved a robust debut despite turbulent market conditions and geopolitical tensions. He added that the company’s future stock performance will be driven by its ongoing earnings and revenue growth.
To mark the occasion, Reliance Jio placed advertisements on the front pages of major Indian newspapers expressing gratitude to the nation. India currently stands as the world’s most active IPO market by deal volume, recording 246 listings this year, though it ranks fourth globally in total capital raised at $13.5 billion, according to LSEG data.
