At least 62 people are dead and thousands displaced following a violent raid by armed bandits in Nigeria's Taraba state. Emergency officials confirm toll.
POLICY WIRE — Abuja, Nigeria — A violent assault by armed gunmen in northeastern Nigeria has left at least 62 people dead, according to reports confirmed by the nation’s emergency management agency on Tuesday.
The deadly incident occurred last Friday within the Binnari community, situated in the Karim-Lamido local government area of Taraba state. Local authorities have attributed the violence to criminal groups frequently referred to as bandits.
Ladan Ayuba, the Taraba state director for the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), stated that the attack resulted in significant casualties beyond the death toll. In addition to those killed, 52 individuals sustained injuries, and thousands of residents have been forced to flee their homes.
Taraba state has long struggled with persistent insecurity, making it a frequent target for such armed incursions. Emergency teams are currently assessing the scale of the displacement as the region grapples with the aftermath of the massacre.
