POLICY WIRE — London, United Kingdom — Grammy-winning musician Chris Brown avoided incarceration on Monday after receiving an eight-month suspended sentence for a violent altercation at a London nightclub three years ago.
The 37-year-old performer faced a potential three-year prison term after entering a guilty plea in July to a charge of affray. The incident occurred in February 2023 at Tape, an exclusive venue located in the Mayfair district, where Brown struck his former associate, Abraham Diaw, twice in the head with a tequila bottle.
During proceedings at Southwark Crown Court, Judge Tony Baumgartner reviewed video evidence of the attack. The judge remarked, The repeated use of a glass bottle in that way, especially aimed at the head, was plainly dangerous, it carried the risk of delivering a more serious injury than was ultimately sustained.
Despite the severity of the assault, Judge Baumgartner opted against a custodial sentence, citing Brown’s guilty plea, his history of charitable contributions, and his stable employment. While acknowledging the singer’s past legal issues, the judge noted that Brown had maintained a clean record in recent years.
Prosecutor Heidi Stonecliffe highlighted that Brown initiated the confrontation, stating, By any circumstances, when one watches that footage, it is Mr. Brown that moves first. In exchange for the guilty plea, prosecutors dropped additional charges, including assault, attempted grievous bodily harm, and possession of an offensive weapon.
Defense attorney Sallie Bennett-Jenkins noted that the incident lasted approximately 20 seconds and conveyed that Brown offers a profound apology to all those present. She described the event as an ugly and unattractive incident that caused distress to those in the club.
The victim, Diaw, was treated at a hospital for injuries to his head and knee before being discharged. Meanwhile, Brown’s associate and vocal coach, Omololu Akinlolu, also pleaded guilty to affray and received a four-month suspended sentence.
Brown, who was arrested in May 2025 at a Manchester hotel following his return to the UK, had been released on a £5 million ($6.7 million) bail. Outside the courthouse, the singer was met by a mix of cheering fans and a lone heckler who questioned his history of violent behavior.
The artist, who rose to fame in 2005, has faced various legal challenges throughout his career, including a 2009 felony conviction. He recently secured his second Grammy for best R&B album in 2025 for 11:11 (Deluxe).
